Inside-Out & Through

[rant]I totally wish I had some artistic talent. Drawing, painting, photography... Anything! But sadly, I came to accept the fact that I don't. I'm a creative person in general, but my artistic ability is going to stay at a Martha-Stewart-grade-school-arts-n-crafts level. Boo. Needles to say, I still enjoy checking out new art. [/rant]

James invited me to the closing reception for artist Nathan Richard Phelps at the E6 Gallery on Market Street. Despite dodging about 6 crack heads walking there, it was all groovy once I met up James and his friend Heather, who is friends with the artist of the hour.

Phelps' current exhibit at E6 Gallery is called Inside-Out & Through. The exhibit is going to be up for another week or so. All black and white. Close up, his paintings and ink work looks super hectic and busy, but stepping back you can see how it forms something shapely.

My favorite one. Imagine having this as your wall paper in your home. How intense would that be? I just really liked the shape of this painting. Heather, who also use to live with Nathan, mentioned he use to do these paintings in color too.

DJ Jason Kendig of Honey Soundsystem. I reallllllly wanted to pet his beard. I love men with facial hair. #fact.

James and Heather. James looking silly. Funny guy. Check out Nathan Richard Phelps artwork before it goes away next week. Be prepared to walk down Crack Head Row on the way there though. Just a little warning before seeing a little art.

Dirty Ghosts

I've been so out of touch with music lately. My iPhone is filled with rap/pop/indie/rNb circa 2003, no lie. So it's refreshing hearing something new that I actually like, rather then replaying old Le Tigre albums over and over again from back when I was a teenager - Feminist Sweepstakes, anyone? I still love them!

Last year I went to a show for San Francisco's Noise Pop Music Festival and attended a show that SF's own Dirty Ghosts were performing in. I really liked them.

Come to find out they have an album coming out this February! I went to see them play at the Knock Out in Bernal Heights since it's been a while since I've seen them play.

Dirty Ghosts looking like Blurry Ghosts. Better pictures of them on my past blog post here. They played a quick set, but it was nice hearing them live again. They're currently making their rounds touring around San Francisco, I'm assuming for their album release, which I will be snatching up with my claws when available. And they will be playing in Noise Pop again this year in February.

I pretty much liked every track they've released so far - "Shout It In" being my favorite at the moment:

Front woman Allyson Baker - I love her voice! There's also a remix to "Shout It In" featuring Aesop Rock, who happens to be Allyson's husband. Can't wait to hear their new album!

Shit San Franciscans Say

Here we go again with the "Shit _______ Say" viral videos that have taken over 2012. When will they end?! I was totally waiting for a San Francisco edition to come out. And of course, it happened.

The whole idea of these videos is to over exaggerate on the stereotypes of what these people would say. So whether you're a native San Franciscan or a transplant, I'm pretty sure you've heard at least ONE of these... I know I have! My favorite is at 45 seconds - that burrito is ridiculous!

Brunch Is My Favorite Meal

Brunch is and will probably always be my favorite meal of the day. I should have it more often when I can!

Eggs benedict (I LOVE poached eggs!) with roasted potatoes, blueberry pancakes, tofu scramble. All thanks to The Plant Cafe, on Steiner and Chestnut :).

-Eat and be jolly.

Heeee Heeee Aaaaooww!

My best friend Jon over at The Stuff I'm Into invited me to the Cirque du Soleil: Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour last night. His boyfriend couldn't make it because of a business trip, so I had the pleasure of being his date for the night along with a couple of his friends.

This was my first Cirque du Soleil I've ever been too. I always wanted to go to one, but never did. And now... I want to learn gymnastics, take muscle relaxers to improve my flexibility, wear shiny outfits, and then run off to the circus. I was expecting more Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon type of acrobatics though, but it made sense that there was more dancing being a Michael Jackson tribute and all. You can't have a tribute to the King of Pop without dancing, rigghhhtt?

So Jon mentioned that he bought the tickets in 2010, shortly after MJ passed away in 2009. 2 years later, and he finally got to see the show. Oh damn. I don't remember the wait list for a Herm├Ęs Birkin bag even being that long. But you can totally see the 2 years worth of production in the show. Costumes, lighting, stunts and all.

My favorite was the Scream bit with Janet Jackson. Actually, the entire show was to awesome to have just one favorite part. Now excuse me as I waste an entire day off laying in bed YouTubing Michael Jackson's entire catalog. Who's bad?

7x7 Big Eat: #35 Salted Caramel Ice Cream @ Bi-Rite Creamery

With the nice weather going on in San Francisco lately, I thought I would take advantage of it by getting ice cream late at night. I mean, how often is the climate good enough for ice cream at 10 p.m.?

I'll Take You To The Candybar

My family has a history of diabetes, so you would think one would stay away from places called "Candybar", right? Helllllll to the NO. Was catching up with Around the Bay Gal Xtine over dessert and bubbly after work last night. We stopped by Candybar in the Western Edition after dinner to discuss the meaning of life. And to eat dessert. Mainly to eat dessert.

Take the 5-Fulton bus to the Candybar. I first came to Candybar for an assignment my editor gave me to check this place out. I usually don't order anything when going to a place on assignment, but being the chubbster I am, I totally got dessert to go the first time here. I couldn't help it.

Xtine with her Strawberry Kiss champagne cocktail. I ordered the Champagne Mango Bellini, that had a scoop of mango sorbet in it... empty calories galore. Sweet sweet empty calories.

You know what else has empty calories? The "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" dessert I ordered. Basically an oversized peanut butter cup smothered in blackberry syrup and candied peanuts. #HellaFat.

This place is full of eye candy as well. Not so much the people, I mean the cool art on the walls. Perfect place to add photos to your instagram album... Cause you know we all do that. Btw, the candle-lit ambiance totally screams "date spot". Take notes, fellows.

SF Instagram - Fell Street

Super adorable. But did he or she fall for the person in a bad or good way? Hopefully good. Because that would suck.

For Penny

As some of you may or may not know, until recently I was working at a physical therapy clinic, leaving last month. My 2 years at the clinic gave me great experience, but I ultimately decided that the world of physical therapy wasn't for me, so I decided to leave and pursue other endeavors.

My favorite part of working at the clinic was definitely working with the patients. It was fun meeting a wide array of people and working with them to better their health. I built friendships with many of them, some whom I still keep in touch with/hang out with today.

One of the friends I made was Penny. The first day of meeting her, we clicked instantly. We would always gossip and talk during her visits and share random stories about what was going on with our lives - food being one of the main subjects, she was a major foodie. We blamed us clicking so well due to the fact that we were both Pisces and shared many personality traits.

I knew that Penny had an on going battle with cancer. I recently found out that her cancer spread so aggressively, that she couldn't continue with her chemotherapy treatments. She is currently receiving hospice care, where she can spend her last days comfortably.

In preparation for her passing, a trust fund account was set up for her 3 young boys. Donating would be greatly appreciated.

I know this subject is totally of topic compared to my usual blog posts, but this is something that I hold dear to my heart. If you are unable to donate, please just send positive and warm thoughts to Penny and her family!

Vegetarian Options: Cha-Ya

I think I might have found a new favorite restaurant here in San Francisco:

Arts Of In-Dee-Ah

I've been invited to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts a couple times for some random events, but I've never had a chance to check it out. With my new job located downtown (and a couple blocks away from the YBCA), I finally got to check it out last night.

Such a cool space tucked away close to the busyness of downtown. Surprisingly the YBCA wasn't crowded, which I expected it to be on a "free museum" day. *Hollerrrr for the first Tuesday of every month*... Heeyyyyyyy. I've always passed this area but never been inside, which is weird considering is right next to the Metreon movie theaters. Btw, can I just say how excited I am for there to be a Target underneath the Metreon. I'm sorry, but San Francisco is over due for one.

The current exhibit going on right now is The Matter Within: New Contemporary Art Of India. It's actually a pretty small exhibit with only 2 galleries. But the art was amazing with sculptures, installations, photography, and films. Something to check out and be inspired if you have any free time.

I see London, I see France... I see crystalized monuments on top of the tortoise shell.

My favorite photograph. Oooo girl, lemme help you out and braid that hair of yours. Kidding.

Stab. Wound. Actually, no these 2 pieces didn't go together. Just happened by itself while I was uploading the pictures.

You don't really think of contemporary art and India together, so it was neat seeing the exhibit of works from Indian artist living in and out of the country. You have till the end of the month to check out The Matter Within: New Contemporary Art Of India. It ends this month on January 29th, so hurry!

7x7 Big Eat: #52 Carnitas @ Nopalito

I've been wanting to try Nopalito for awhile now, and I finally got a chance to, today! My friend Joey surprised me with reservations and I couldn't have been more excited. Carnitas = <3.

Au Revoir 2011, Salut 2012!

OMG, it's 2012! Happy New Year, everyone! Hope everyone celebrated safely, and had fun in the process, of course. Looking back, it's cray cray how fast this year flew by. I know I say that every year, but this year I found that to be particularly true.

I spent my NYE being somewhat low key with a group of friends followed by some shenanigans around our local neighborhood bars. Nothing to crazy, but still a good time with good company, can't ask for anything more!

I'm hoping to blog a little more consistently this year, just one of my personal New Year resolutions. That, and to finally get the style section of my blog up! On a blog related side note: new handle for the new year - KimKardashnguyen.blogspot.com. All credits to my partner in crime Around the Bay Gal Xtine for coming up with such a great name!

Here's to hoping 2012 is filled with fun, laughs, and all things great. Cheers, ya'll!
